Why Hummingbirds Are Not Coming

An empty hummingbird feeder does not always mean you are doing something wrong. Sometimes the birds are not in your area yet; other times one small detail is making the yard less appealing.

I have this page and need a main image for it.

Start with Timing Before Changing Everything

If migration has not reached your region or nesting females are feeding in different places, feeder activity can be quiet for days. Weather fronts, bloom cycles, and neighborhood competition all affect visits.

Do not move the feeder every afternoon. Give birds time to discover it, especially if you recently changed locations or started feeding for the first time.

Check the Feeder from a Bird’S Point of View

A feeder in full afternoon sun can spoil quickly. A feeder tucked deep under a porch roof may be hard to spot. A feeder beside a busy door may be too disruptive during the best feeding hours.

Fresh nectar, visible placement, nearby perches, and low disturbance solve many empty-feeder problems. Flowers nearby can help birds notice the area sooner.

Most Common Causes

  • Nectar has soured before birds returned.
  • The feeder is hidden from normal flight paths.
  • Ants, bees, or wasps are dominating the ports.
  • A dominant bird is chasing newcomers away.
  • There are few flowers or perches nearby.
