Hummingbird Nesting Season
Hummingbird nesting season is easy to miss because the nest is tiny, the female is discreet, and the best help is usually quiet distance.
Females Do the Nesting Work
In most hummingbird species, the female builds the nest, incubates eggs, and feeds the chicks. Males do not form a pair that helps raise young.
A female may visit a feeder often while nesting, but she also needs insects and safe routes between food and the nest.
Nests Can Be in Ordinary Places
Branches, shrubs, vines, and even hanging baskets may hold nests. The outside can be camouflaged with lichens or plant material, making it blend into the surroundings.
Avoid heavy pruning during peak nesting months if hummingbirds are active in the yard. Look carefully before trimming fine branches or moving baskets.
How to Help
- Watch from a distance rather than approaching repeatedly.
- Keep feeders clean so nesting females have reliable energy.
- Avoid pesticide use near nesting and feeding areas.
- Delay pruning if you suspect a nest is present.
