Why Bloom Timing Matters

A hummingbird garden is strongest when something useful is blooming across the whole season. One excellent flower can create a busy week, but layered bloom times create a more dependable feeding route.

Think in waves: early nectar for arrival, abundant summer flowers for nesting and fledglings, and late blooms for migration fuel. Containers can fill gaps while permanent plantings mature.

Seasonal Bloom Strategy

  1. Early Season: Add cold-tolerant or early perennial blooms where your region allows.
  2. Peak Season: Use heavy-blooming perennials and annuals near patios, beds, and feeder areas.
  3. Late Season: Keep fall-blooming nectar plants available until migration fades.

Plan For A Season, Not A Single Bloom

A hummingbird garden works best when something useful is blooming across the full season. Early flowers support arrivals, summer blooms support nesting and fledglings, and late blooms help migrants refuel.

For the best results, combine the tool result with direct observation. Watch how quickly nectar drops, whether flowers are blooming nearby, how often birds perch before feeding, and whether weather changes alter activity. Small notes from your own yard can make the recommendation more accurate over time.
