Baby Hummingbirds Guide
Baby hummingbirds grow quickly, but they still need careful protection and frequent feeding from the female.
Chicks Need More Than Nectar
Adult hummingbirds feed chicks a mixture that includes tiny insects and nectar. Protein is essential for growth, so a healthy yard should support small insects as well as flowers.
This is one reason pesticide-free gardens matter. Removing all insects can make a yard less useful during nesting season.
Fledging Can Look Messy
Young hummingbirds may spend time near the nest as they practice balance and flight. A fledgling on a branch is not automatically abandoned.
If a baby bird is on the ground, injured, cold, or clearly in danger, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for local guidance rather than trying to raise it yourself.
Helpful Observations
- Watch whether the female returns before assuming abandonment.
- Keep people and pets away from the immediate area.
- Do not offer nectar directly to a chick.
- Call a rehabilitator for injured or grounded young.
